How To Change Motor Rotation In Betaflight

There are two principal ways to change motor spin direction in an FPV drone. Yous can either swap the motor wires, or simply alter a setting in the ESC configurator without soldering. In this tutorial I will show you how to change motor rotation.

Bank check If Motors Are Spinning The Correct Direction

If yous are edifice a new quadcopter, you have to make certain the motors are spinning the correct direction before putting propellers on for the first flying. If one or multiple motors are spinning the wrong direction, the quad will probably flip over at take off.

This is the default motor spin directions in Betaflight:

If the motor spin direction is incorrect, y'all can easily change it past using one of the following methods.

Betaflight 4.3: You tin Do It in the Configurator!

Betaflight 4.3 Motor Direction

Since Betaflight 4.3, you tin at present reverse the rotation of a motor inside Betaflight Configurator (on the motors tab), no demand to employ BLHeliSuite for that anymore!

Bandy Motor Wires

By simply swapping ANY 2 of the 3 wires betwixt the motor and ESC, yous can reverse the rotation of the motor. It doesn't matter which two wires, the outcome would be the same.

Opposite motor management in BLHeliSuite software

If you lot don't like soldering, you can also hands change motor direction in BLHeliSuite – a software program for configuring BLHeli_S ESC. If you are using BLHeli_32 ESC's, the program is chosen BLHeliSuite_32.

  • Download the latest BLHeliSuite from here
    • BLHeli32: https://github.com/bitdump/BLHeli/tree/master/BLHeli_32%20ARM
    • BLHeli_S: https://oscarliang.com/flash-blheli-s-esc-firmware-fc-pass-through/
  • Open up BLHeliSuite and connect to your quadcopter to computer via a USB cable
  • Plug in a battery to power your quad, and then click the "Connect" push in the configurator
  • Click "Read Setup" – if you are getting fault – this could mean your ESC is either non a BLHeli_32 or BLHeli_S ESC, try the other configurator
  • If everything is ok, y'all volition become a summary of the discovered ESC
  • In the bottom right corner – select an ESC you lot want to alter

If Motor Direction was set to "Normal", you lot can reverse motor direction past changing it to "Reverse". And if information technology was already set to "Reverse", you lot just demand to change it back to "Normal". You lot besides accept the selection to set it to "3D", which volition allow your motor to spin both directions for 3D acro flying. Don't set it to "3D" unless you know what you are doing.

Oscar Commencement off thanks for sharing ur cognition ! Second …Motor rotation isnt responding when i opposite motors in Betaflight . I can reverse them in BL Heli but and so they wont reverse in BF . I wrote setup accidently on all iv motors in bl heli 32 so i think my quad is thinkin my motors are normal when theyve been reversed . And again they dont reply when i contrary motor direction and relieve and reboot in Betaflight . TIA! and once more Thank you!

I am not 100% sure I understand your question. Do y'all desire to employ "reversed motor management" or not?
Assuming y'all just want to stick with normal motor rotation, go to the "Configuration" tab in Betaflight, and disable "Motor management reversed". Then go through these steps to set up your motor rotations in BLHeli:

Hey Oscar,
in blheil32 i changed 2 motors to reversed and then i dont know exactly what happened i recollect when i disconnected the cord information technology beeped repeatedly. this morning i plugged it in usb and its fine its recognized by blheli32 only the esc'south nothing … plugged in 4s bombardment and—>beep beep beep … beep beep beep … beep beep beep … where the beeping office lasts near one full second and the "…" part lasts virtually peradventure a quarter of a second. disconnected reconnected tried betaflight- beeper settings-off — connect 4s — Beeping repeatedly again

I NEED Assist Please! Thanks in accelerate

cant get BLHeli to connect to QGroundConrol. Getting error message – cant connect to com 3 – .Is BLHeli uniform with Qgroundcontrol. Or take I set information technology upward incorrectly. I would rather use the reckoner than resolder. I am using Pixhawk4 FC with four Tekko 32 ESC

got some weird stuff here. motor 3 is running the wrong direction. easy enough. open blheli, contrary motor 3. WHAT I GET is motor 1 reversing management. WTF? i used both speedybee, and laptop with betaflight. both did the aforementioned affair. ive never seen this before. have you?

Hello! Thanks so much for all your content on here it really helped me go into the hobby.
I ran into a problem when switching to new motor.. When I push the throttle right to the signal where the quad should start hovering it instead launches 10-15 k until i disarm and it drops. I exercise non know if this is a common problem merely I hope maybe you know what may cause this.

Hi Oscar,
Maybe a small additional note. If you do not utilize directly mount propellors only have these properllors with a central prop nut, AND y'all have motors with a fixed (not removable) prop shaft with threads, and then you lot cannot simply swap wires. You need to actually swap motors. This is because if y'all let a motor run the other mode, the prop nut is not self tightening but self loosening.
I ran into this in my current build. All motors turned correctly relative to each other, but they all turned reverse to their intended rotation management. I then switched 2 wires on all iv motors, and so they all turned the other manner, and then the prop basics were self tightening again. But the direction were opposite of the default of betaflight. But in betaflight there is a switch to tell betaflight the motors run in reversed direction. Oddly enough, afterwards I did an esc calibration, all motors switched direction!!
What the heck!
Rgds,
Werner

Hello Oscar, This is a fabulous website. I appreciate what y'all have washed for me and everyone in the FPV community. I just finished building the Impulse RC Reverb using the Kiss 32A ESC's. The motors are all spinning CCW. I thought I could use Passthrough with the Osculation F7 FC v2 to get the directions correct, but I cannot detect anything and BL Heli tries to reboot the FC and it fails every time. I can modify the wires on 2 of the motors, but I don't want to solder through my rut shrink. Any ideas? Give thanks

I am not 100% certain, but last fourth dimension I used Buss(iii years ago) it doesn't support pass through, it's only a Betaflight and BLHeli thing.

Hello beginning want to thanks for a Neat page . and all the work you put in to helping . others in this . Astonishing Hobby . I have one question if I have the Tekko esc for . dji fpv set my computer is down and all motors are spinning the same direction . fifty-fifty with the iv in one ESC tin can I do like ever merely cut 2 wires and Soder them togheter to become them to go the other way . Cheers a thousand
All-time Regards

Basically it'due south just the same how you connect the wires? I idea maybe the heart i from motor had to be in the eye on the esc? But that is not right?

no, information technology doesn't matter, yous can connect them in any society.

You can't reverse motor direction in Betaflight. It's only doable in BLHeli.

If using an arduino you tin switch a mosfet or relay to contrary the direction.

Is information technology any way to change the motor direction midflight. As far every bit I've read on forums, people advise some circuitry to interchange the motor wires but I need some better method preferably by software control. Please let me know about whatsoever other fashion of doing the same.
PS- This is for a multirotor image that I am working on.

Hiw practise you wire cw motors ccw on a four in i esc? I have a set of hyperlite 2405-1722 and they are all cw.

Oscar 21st March 2019 - vii:34 pm

CW motor? I guess y'all are talking most the thread of the shaft?
It doesn't matter how y'all wire it. Just connect the 3 motor wires, then cheque spin direction. If it's wrong, so you just need to opposite it.
